William Temple was the English ambassador to Brussels who, in 1668, represented England in the negotiations of the Triple Alliance (1668). His diplomatic activities contributed to the shifting balance of power that affected the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) and, by extension, the VOC’s position in the Sultanate of Aceh.
Role in the Triple Alliance
Temple worked alongside the Swedish envoy Graf von Dohna and the Dutch negotiators to formalise the alliance that sought to counter Louis XIV’s expansion, a development that indirectly impacted Dutch trade routes to Aceh.
