Johan de Witt was the Grand Pensionary of the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) who, in 1668, helped draft the Triple Alliance (1668) between the Republic, England, and Sweden. His diplomatic work aimed to curb the expansionist ambitions of Louis XIV and to protect Dutch commercial interests in the Indian Ocean, including the Sultanate of Aceh.
Diplomatic Activity
De Witt negotiated the secret Treaty of Dover (1670) indirectly by attempting to balance English and French pressures. His policies influenced the Republic’s ability to maintain a naval presence off Aceh’s coast during the volatile Disaster Year 1672.
