1667 was the year when the French army captured large parts of Flanders and Franche‑Comté, heightening Dutch fears of French expansion and prompting the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) to seek alliances such as the Triple Alliance (1668). The resulting diplomatic tension affected the VOC’s capacity to protect its trade with the Sultanate of Aceh.
