Wòjla was the landschap of the Meulaboh country, divided into Boven Wòjla and Beneden Wòjla, which became under its bivouac commander at Koeala Bhèë a model district of the west coast.
In 1908 an official report recorded that in the Wòjla district politics had been “gemodderd”. In 1909 a mobile marechaussée column under Darlang temporarily occupied the mouth of the Wòjla, and the pacification of the Boven Wòjla under Scheurleer from Tanòh Mirah produced the submission of two hundred resistance men. In April 1910 the band of Tgk. Imeum Sradeuë’ was surprised in Wòjla and T. Adam fell on the Beneden Wòjla. By 1918 Wòjla had so flourished that H. J. Schmidt “zelfs hoofden uit andere streken ‘ter instructie’ nu en dan naar Wòjla dirigeerde”: the roads were exceptionally well maintained, the gampongs excelled in order and cleanliness, and tax collection and school attendance left nothing to be desired.
