Born in Lho’ Soekonsche, not of distinguished origin or education. One of the ‘petocha peuët’ (four leaders) of Teungoh. Brave and cunning. After death of Teukoe Tjhi Teunong (executed 1905), married his widow Tjoet Meuthia. The party of Teukoe Tjhi Teunong took Tjoet Meuthia and her ~6-year-old son into the forest; Pang Nanggròë soon followed. His leadership capacities came to the fore; soon became acknowledged commander. Called the ‘Watergeus’ (Water Beggar) by the Dutch because in one of his first attacks on military seaside establishments he came with praus. Long list of attacks: Ara Koendo attack (10 carbines lost), overval on a marchbivak in the Idische, bombardments of bivaks Lho’ Soekon and Panton Laboe, attacks on tram coolies and personnel, destruction of tramway. His stepson was proclaimed oelèëbalang of Keureutòë; the child’s presence and the reverence for the mother (Tjoet Meuthia) strengthened his influence. Became a political danger. In September 1910 a brigade under Sergeant Van Slooten surprised him in marshland; he was killed.

Significance

Pang Nanggròë appears in Jongejan’s account as one of the figures shaping the history of Aceh during the period covered by the book.
