Slooten was the Dutch sergeant and brigade commander who killed Pang Nanggròë in the Paja Tjitjém on 26 September 1910.
Ordered on 24 September to look for Pang Nanggròë in the Bird Marsh, “de baas” marched the same day with his brigade through Peutèë and heard from an Acehnese woman that three of Pang Nanggròë’s men were under the meunasah of gampong Aloeë. Though it was night and pouring with rain, Slooten pressed on into the forest to gampong Aloeë Awé. He gave his dead-tired brigade only a few hours’ rest and resumed the hunt before dawn on 25 September, holding the tracks fast into the marsh and following them on 26 September through mud and water sometimes up to the arms. At midday voices were heard; a marechaussée fell in the tangle of roots and the loud splash alarmed the camp; the brigade rushed forward and a fugitive already two hundred metres off was hit and fell — “en de gids zegt: Pang Nanggròë.”
