Medical Service in Aceh was the military healthcare, hospital, and sanitary corps of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army deployed in the Aceh Sultanate to combat combat casualties and tropical diseases between 1873 and 1876.
Strength and Organization in 1875
On 26 December 1875, the medical service in Aceh totaled 120 personnel, comprising 24 European military physicians and surgeons and 105 indigenous medical assistants and hospital orderlies.
Crisis in the Kraton Hospital and Reforms
During the Second Aceh Expedition in early 1874, the service faced a catastrophic medical crisis when the primary hospital inside Kraton of Aceh became overcrowded, triggering severe cholera outbreaks (Field Hospital and Cholera Epidemics in Aceh).
Under General J. L. J. H. Pel in 1874 and 1875, the Medical Service in Aceh reorganized its sanitary infrastructure, erecting elevated wooden hospital pavilions at Pantei Perak along the Aceh River and at Oleh-leh, significantly reducing disease mortality during General Pel’s Campaign in Aceh.
