Poeloe Nassie (modern Pulo Nasi) is a maritime island situated off the northwestern tip of Sumatra near the entrance to the Aceh River estuary, in modern Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh Province, Indonesia.
Military Supply and Hospital Base
During the Second Aceh Expedition in 1873 and 1874, General J. van Swieten utilized the sheltered anchorages of Poeloe Nassie as a naval staging area and quarantine station for the Dutch East Indies Government.
As documented in official returns in Atjeh gedurende de tweede expeditie en later (1876), Poeloe Nassie served as an offshore medical evacuation center for the Medical Service in Aceh, where hundreds of sick soldiers and convict laborers (Forced Labor in Aceh Military Campaigns) suffering from cholera and dysentery (Field Hospital and Cholera Epidemics in Aceh) were sent to recover away from the malaria-ridden coast.
