Saparoea (Saparua) is an island in the Molukken archipelago where, on 17 May 1817, a Dutch landing division under Majoor Beetjes attempted to suppress a local uprising. The operation ended in a disastrous defeat, with heavy casualties among Dutch forces, including marines from the frigates Evertsen and Nassan (page 92).
Strategic Importance
The island’s position made it a focal point for Dutch attempts to control the sea lanes and to pacify the “overzeeache” (overseas Aceh) territories.
