Majoor Beetjes was a Dutch army officer who commanded a mixed force of land and sea troops during the 17 May 1817 uprising on the island of Saparoea, an episode of the broader Dutch effort to pacify the Aceh region and its surrounding archipelago. His leadership of the expedition, which ended in a disastrous failure with heavy casualties, is recorded in the histories of the Dutch Marine Corps (see page 92).
The Saparoea Expedition
Majoor Beetjes led a detachment drawn from the Indische leger and the Dutch Marine Corps to suppress the rebellion that erupted on Saparoea on 17 May 1817. The landing site was poorly chosen, and the operation suffered from inadequate reconnaissance. The expedition resulted in the death of Beetjes, ten officers, and 350 other ranks, as well as marines from the frigates Evertsen and Nassan (page 92).
Consequences
The failure underscored the difficulties of amphibious warfare in the rugged coastal terrain of the Aceh‑adjacent islands and prompted a reassessment of Dutch landing tactics in the region.
