When Swart was twelve, Van Duijl — “a clever, good teacher, whom Swart still vividly remembered” — decided to teach him French so that the boy could enter the H.B.S. (Hogere Burgerschool). He succeeded. In the highest class he sat the entrance examination for the K.M.A. at Breda: it was settled between him and his two brothers that all three would become officers of the Indies army. Swart passed, but was ranked eighty-second when only the first seventy-two were admitted.
