Smith, J. P. was a Dutch marine lieutenant who was wounded in the left arm by a shot on 23 January 1874 and later died on 26 January 1874 in the bivouac at Penajoeng. He had entered the Militaire Academie at Breda as a second lieutenant in August 1857 and had previously been appointed captain, despite the usual rule that only graduates of the Royal Naval Academy could hold such rank.

Service and death

Smith’s death was marked by a solemn burial on 27 January 1874 with a wooden memorial placed on his grave. His loss was felt keenly within the small officer corps of the Dutch marines.
