J. A. de Bruyne was a Dutch historian, director of the Hoogere Burgerschool at Zierikzee, and author of De geschiedenis van Nederland in onzen tijd (“The History of the Netherlands in Our Time”), a multi-volume work of which Volume IV (1872-1883, new edition, Schiedam: J. F. Dupont, 1912) is the source for the present article. The work is a comprehensive history of the Netherlands — domestic and colonial — in the period covered, and its first chapter is devoted to the Atjeh-oorlog and to the administration of the Governors-General Loudon and Van Lansberge.
The Work
De geschiedenis van Nederland in onzen tijd is a multi-volume work; Volume IV covers the period 1872-1883 in 516 pages. The first chapter (Hoofdstuk I) is devoted to the Atjeh-oorlog and to Nederlandsch-Indië under the Governors-General Loudon and Van Lansberge, and runs from page 1 to page 115. The chapter is organised in two principal sections: the first (pp. 1-52) covering the war under Loudon — the outbreak, the first expedition of April 1873, the second expedition of November 1873 – January 1874, the fall of the Kraton on 24 January 24 January 1874, the operations under General Pel until Loudon’s departure, the operations in other parts of the archipelago (Deli, Sintang, Kraeng Bonto-Bonto), and Loudon’s domestic reforms; the second (pp. 52-115) covering the war under Van Lansberge — the conversiequaestie, the harbour at Tandjong Priok, the campaigns under Wiggers van Kerchem, Diemont, and Van der Heyden, the Batak War of 1878, the submission of Habib Abdurrahman of 13 October 13 October 1878, the campaign against the XXII Moekims of 1879, the campaign against the XXVI Moekims of July 1879, the Selimoen expedition of August 1879, the Batoe Iliq expedition of July 1880, and the establishment of civil government on 6 April 6 April 1881.
Method and Sources
The work is based on the official colonial reports (koloniale verslagen), the published correspondence and notes of the principal actors (notably the note of General Pel of 30 April 30 April 1875 to the Governor-General, and the cabinet letter of Van Lansberge of 21 March 21 March 1879), and the communications of Dr. C. Snouck Hurgronje — in particular the contents of the Hikajat Prang Kompeuni communicated by Snouck Hurgronje. The work is written in the neutral, scholarly register of Dutch historical writing of the early twentieth century, and is among the principal Dutch secondary sources for the early years of the Atjeh-oorlog.
