Bischoff was a Dutch colonial army officer who is recorded in the De geschiedenis van het Nederlandsche Korps Mariniers van 1665-1945 as commanding Dutch forces in two early-nineteenth-century Sumatran expeditions: as Lieutenant-colonel Bischoff in the 17 June 1821 phase of the second Dutch expedition against Palembang, and as Colonel Bischoff in the 27 August 1824 expedition against the Sultan of Aceh. His 1824 operation at the island of Gombora cleared the way for further Dutch advances up the river to the Aceh capital.
The 1821 Palembang Expedition
As a Lieutenant-colonel, Bischoff commanded a column of 800 men, including a rear guard of 50 *mariniers* (Dutch marines), during the 17 June 1821 phase of the second Dutch expedition against Palembang. His forces attempted a rear attack on the enemy fortifications at the Peladjoe but were repulsed (p. 94). The column formed part of the larger force under General-majoor De Kock and Captain Lewe van Aduard, and the operation faced numerous logistical difficulties, including obstructed waterways and strong enemy batteries.
The 1824 Aceh Expedition and the Capture of the Gombora Battery
By 1824, promoted to Colonel, Bischoff led the landing party that seized the battery on the island of Gombora and raised the Dutch flag during the 1824 expedition against the Sultan of Aceh. On the morning of 27 August 1824, he sailed with a small squadron, including the vessels Venus and Ajjax, and forced a passage through a palisade barrier to storm the battery on Gombora. After a brief fight the Dutch forces planted their flag and silenced the enemy guns (pp. 95-96). The success allowed the Dutch navy to continue upriver, eventually reaching the royal palace (the kraton) where the Aceh sultan was taken into custody and later exiled to Ternate.
Significance
Bischoff’s two recorded operations — at Palembang in 1821 and at Gombora in 1824 — illustrate the integrated use of *mariniers* and army columns in early-nineteenth-century Dutch colonial warfare in Sumatra. The Korps Mariniers history records him at two successive ranks (Lieutenant-colonel and Colonel) across two distinct campaigns three years apart; the source does not explicitly identify the two mentions as the same officer, but the surname, era, and operational context are consistent with a single career spanning the 1821 Palembang and 1824 Aceh expeditions.
