The Sultan of Aceh (captured 1824) was the reigning monarch of the Aceh Sultanate who was seized by Dutch forces during their 1824 riverine expedition and subsequently exiled to Ternate. His capture marked a decisive moment in the Dutch effort to subdue Aceh and restore order on Sumatra after years of unrest.
Capture and Exile
After the Dutch forces broke through the river defenses and reached the royal palace, the sultan was taken prisoner and transferred to the island of Ternate where he remained in exile.
Significance
The removal of the sultan temporarily weakened Aceh’s central authority, allowing the Dutch to consolidate their control over the lower reaches of the Aceh river system.
