Barissans of Bangkallan was an indigenous auxiliary military organization recruited from the regency of Bangkallan on Madura, which served alongside regular battalions of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army during campaigns against the Aceh Sultanate between 1873 and 1876.
Organization and Strength
As documented in official returns on 26 December 1875, two full battalions of barissans were deployed in Aceh, comprising 40 European and indigenous officers and over 1,600 Madurese soldiers. A specialized reinforcement contingent from Bangkallan numbered 21 officers and 497 soldiers.
Role in Pel’s Offensive Campaigns
During General Pel’s Campaign in Aceh, the Barissans of Bangkallan served as vanguard and flank guards. On 26 December 1875, two barissan battalions led the assault during the Attack on Mibouw.
On 13 February 1876, the Bangkallan auxiliary troops marched alongside the 3rd Infantry Battalion, 12th Infantry Battalion, and 13th Infantry Battalion during the March through the XXII Moekims, engaging forces led by Panglima Polem.
