Bangkallan (modern Bangkalan Regency) was a regency and native principality located on the western coast of the island of Madura, East Java, Indonesia, which served as a primary recruitment center for indigenous auxiliary troops of the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army during the Aceh War.
Military Recruitment for Aceh
Under colonial treaty obligations with the Dutch East Indies Government, the rulers of Bangkallan organized auxiliary infantry units known as the Barissans of Bangkallan.
In 1873, 1874, and 1875, thousands of Madurese soldiers from Bangkallan were transported to Aceh, serving as storm troops and flank guards under General J. L. J. H. Pel during the Attack on Mibouw and the March through the XXII Moekims in 1876.
