  • The chapter on the VOC in the western part of the archipelago (Chapter II.5, pp. 154-159), which covers Atjeh’s trade with Gujerat and Suratte, the elephant-fight illustration of 1613, and the VOC’s conflict with Atjeh on Sumatra’s Westkust.
  • The chapter on the Indies under the State (Chapter IV, by Gonggrijp, pp. 197, 205, 209, 216-219), which covers the 1824 London Treaty, the 1857 contract, the 1871 Sumatra-tractaat, the Atjehoorlog of 1873-1904, and the post-1904 consolidation.
  • The chapter on the ethical-policy period (Chapter IV, p. 238), which covers the post-Atjeh establishment of effective Dutch authority.
