23 August is the date on which, in 1933, the ophthalmologist Dr. J. Tijssen came again to Koeta Radja and travelled thence to Bakongan, beginning the tour of the West Coast of Atjeh recorded in Een strijd in Atjeh (1934).
The account reads: “Den 23en Augustus van dit jaar kwam Tijssen opnieuw in Kota Radja en reisde van daar door naar Bakongan, land, waarvan men zich den naam herinnert door het verzet van 1925 en ‘26.” — On the 23rd of August of this year Tijssen came again to Kota Radja and travelled thence to Bakongan, a land whose name is remembered for the resistance of 1925 and ‘26.
At Koeta Radja he took counsel with the governor Van Aken, who wished him to go this time to the West Coast. The journey that followed is described at Tijssen’s journey to the West Coast of Atjeh and Simaloer (1933); it produced two hundred and forty-seven treatments for eye disease, twenty-four cataract operations, and the series of the seven juvenile cataracts between Meulaboh and Singkel.
