Bedet was an infantry captain of the Netherlands East Indies Army who, during the expedition of the Lamtoba column of 1879, commanded the two companies of the 9e Bataljon Infanterie left behind at the beach bivak of Lampanas as guard of the temporary provisions depot — the post on which the supply of the whole column at Lamtoba depended — as recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889).
The Lampanas depot
On 28 July 1879, when the column marched for the interior, Captain Bedet remained at Lampanas with two companies of the 9th Battalion. He was ordered to begin the next morning with the construction of a provisions storehouse and a temporary kampong for one company — for which, beside the engineers’ materials brought in, attap and pinang trees could be purchased from Toekoe Mas, the head of the kampong Lampanas — while twenty coolies and four carpenters with a mandoer of the detachment of Mineurs remained attached to him for the execution of these works. The roadstead of Lampanas was supplied from Oleh-leh by the government steamboat Zeemeeuw, which, at the column-commander’s request, also brought up slaughter cattle when the runderpest-thinned herds of the Lamtoba valley failed to furnish fresh meat.
The garrison of Lampanas was thinned once — when the 3rd Company of the battalion was called up to Lamtoba for the Kepaja Doewa affair — and strengthened again when, on account of the sickliness of the Europeans, the 1st (European) Company of the battalion was sent down to the coast and the 4th marched up in exchange. After the column’s return to the coast the barracks camp of the Lampanas quarantine was found ready by the returning troops, erected by the remaining company and the engineer coolies; and on 23 August 1879 the last element of the command came in with Majoor Coblijn’s division.
