1851 was a year of notable Dutch anti‑smuggling activity on the west coast of Borneo, as well as a point in the career of Governor Van Heutsz within the broader Dutch colonial administration in Aceh. In May 1851 Dutch naval forces, including the frigate Rijn, attempted to navigate the Sambas River, encountering armed resistance from Chinese Kongsi groups. The operation aimed to secure the maritime trade routes that were vital to the Sultanate of Aceh and to suppress illicit commerce along the Bornean shoreline.
