In October the bivouac at Goempang was burned and a klewang attack made on the monthly transport to Koeala Simpang at Pénding, costing three wounded against ten of the attackers killed; but some thirty-eight ill-disposed men were killed that month and a number submitted voluntarily. At the end of November H. N. A. Swart visited the district and could already visit gampongs two hours from Blang Kedjerèn without military escort.

In October the bivouac at Goempang was still burned and a klewang attack was made on the monthly transport to Koeala Simpang at Pénding, in which the Dutch had three wounded while ten of the attackers fell; but through the increased Dutch activity some thirty-eight ill-disposed men were killed in that month, while a number of people submitted of their own accord and in November a number of prominent leaders fell or offered their submission. Thereafter improvement set in: at the end of November Swart visited the district and could already visit gampongs two hours from Blang Kedjerèn without military escort.
From klewang
Du Croo defined the pacificatie as the conversion of Atjeh from a province “governed with sabre and carbine” into a normal part of the Indies. Under van Heutsz “the offensive and the sabre came to the fore.” The klewang attack — the sudden rush with cold steel on a careless bivouac or patrol — remained the characteristic Acehnese tactic to the end: at Nalon in 1911, at Linggö, at Pénding, and finally at Koeala Bhèë on 25 April 1918. “Meulaboh is the country par excellence for sabre charges,” du Croo wrote. It was a klewang blow across the face that disfigured G. F. P. Gosenson for life in 1917, and an Acehnese police servant’s klewang that struck down T. Béntara Titeuë in 1913.
