H. N. A. Swart — registered in his stamboek (service record) as Henri Nicolaas Alfred Swart, born at Tjibitoeng in the Preanger Regentschappen on 12 October 1863 — was the Dutch luitenant-generaal of infantry of the K.N.I.L. who served as Civil and Military Governor of Atjeh en Onderhoorigheden from 10 June 1908 to 2 September 1918, the last military governor of Atjeh and the man whom Dutch colonial memory named the Pacificator van Atjeh (“Pacifier of Atjeh”). M. H. du Croo’s biography General Swart, Pacifier of Atjeh (1943) — written with the collaboration of H. J. Schmidt and on the basis of long interviews with Swart himself, then seventy-nine years old — treats his ten-year Acehnese governorship as the summit of a career that ran from volunteer private in 1880 to Vice-President of the Raad van Nederlandsch-Indië in 1918–1922.

1863 was the birth year of H. N. A. Swart, born on 12 October 1863 at Tjibitoeng in the Preanger Regentschappen, son of Klaas Swart, a Groninger who worked in the Indies first in the cultures and then in the civil service, and of Cornelia Maria Johanna Maria Gouay.
