Pasai was/is a historic maritime coastal kingdom and district in northern Aceh (modern North Aceh Regency).
Historical Context and Role
Renowned historically as one of the earliest Islamic sultanates in Southeast Asia, Pasai was a hotbed of anti-colonial resistance until its subjugation alongside Peusangan in 1899 by Dutch expeditionary forces under Van Heutsz.
