Journal of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (J.S.B.R.ASS) was a learned periodical published in Singapore that featured articles on the languages, history, and cultures of the Malay Peninsula and archipelago. It published an edition of the Hikayat Raja-raja Pasai edited by J. P. Mead.

Publication History

The source records that Mead’s edition of the Hikayat Raja-raja Pasai appeared in J.S.B.R.ASS volume 66 (1914). The journal provided a platform for colonial administrators, missionaries, and scholars to disseminate research on Malay manuscripts and epigraphy.

Contribution to Acehnese Historiography

By making the Hikayat accessible to an English‑reading audience, J.S.B.R.ASS facilitated early scholarly engagement with the history of Pasai and its successor states in Aceh. The journal’s articles remain cited in bibliographies of Malay literary texts and in studies of the Islamisation of Sumatra.
