Lampahan — also corrected to Lampahan from the OCR’s Lamsanan — is a place on the Gajo-weg between Blang Rakal and Takengon, at kilometre 84, where the traveller can refresh himself with a cool or warm drink at the coffee-house of a Chinese who slowly but surely grows rich through his coffee-house and his trade with the coming and going men and women. There one finds the carts and the unyoked draught-animals of the Atjehnese who help to maintain the transport between Bireuen and the Gajo-land. A return trip between Bireuen and Takengon — the 105 kilometres — they do in no less than fifteen days; they travel by night and by day they stay at the stopping-places. ‘Tijd is hier geen geld’ — Time is no money here.
