Kota Mogat was a heavy stone coastal fortification located near Pante Cermin along the lagoon defense line of Great Aceh.
Military Role
Kota Mogat was constructed with high stone walls backed against a tidal lagoon to guard the coastal approach to the capital. During the First Aceh Expedition, Dutch troops under Colonel Eduard Cornelis van Daalen attempted to storm Kota Mogat on 8 April 1873, but were repulsed due to the lack of storming ladders and heavy Acehnese musket fire.
On 9 April 1873, Dutch naval gunships bombarded the stone walls, creating a breach that enabled the Madoera Barisan battalion to capture the fort without further casualties.
