Eduard Cornelis van Daalen was a Colonel in the Dutch East Indies Army who served as second-in-command and infantry commander during the First Aceh Expedition in 1873.
Command During the First Aceh Expedition
Colonel Van Daalen directed infantry landing operations at Pante Cermin on 8 April 1873 and led attacks against Kota Mogat. Following the death of Major-General Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler on 14 April 1873, Van Daalen assumed operational command of the expedition force.
On 16 April 1873, Van Daalen authorized an assault on the outer works of the Kraton of Aceh. When the attack was repulsed with heavy losses, he convened a council of war with senior officers. Recognizing the strength of Acehnese defenses and the threat of the upcoming monsoons, Van Daalen decided to withdraw all forces to the beachhead and re-embark for Java.
