Djombang (modern Jombang) was a town in eastern Java that served as a staging point for the Zuid‑colonne of the Koninklijk Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger in March 1942. The Marinebataljon arrived there on 4 March 1942 and was tasked with preparing for further operations towards Tjepoe and Ngawi.
Military Use
The town hosted the Marinebataljon’s headquarters, a school used as barracks, and a hotel for staff. It also became the rendezvous point for a detachment led by Lieutenant‑colonel J. G. M. Nass heading to Ngandjoek.
Significance
Djombang’s logistical facilities were essential for Dutch troop movements during the rapid Japanese advance, highlighting the importance of interior towns in wartime strategy.
