Bali is an island in the Indonesia archipelago that became the scene of a Dutch marine expedition in 1905 and a subsequent action against Kloenkoeng in 1908. Although the island was never incorporated into the Aceh sultanate, its campaigns are recorded alongside the Aceh‑related operations of the Dutch Marine Corps in the early twentieth century.
Expedition to Bali (1905)
The 1905 expedition was launched by the Dutch to subdue Balinese resistance to Dutch authority. Dutch forces sought to enforce colonial control over the island’s principal kingdoms, confronting local leaders who opposed foreign rule. The operation marked a decisive step in extending Dutch influence beyond the western parts of the archipelago.
Action against Kloenkoeng (1908)
In 1908, the Dutch mounted a focused action against the town of Kloenkoeng (now known as Klungkung), completing the final pacification of Bali. The 1908 operation targeted remaining pockets of resistance and solidified Dutch administrative dominance over the island.
