The Arakoendo-rivier — the Arakoendo river, also Kroeëng Arakoendo — is one of the principal rivers of the Noordkust of [[Atjeh|Atjèh], and, together with the Peusangen-rivier, the site of one of the principal Dutch flood-control (bandjir-freedom) works in Atjèh — works to a total of more than half a million guilders, by which some tens of thousands of hectares of sawah-land have been freed from the almost annual excess of flooding.
The Bandjir-Freedom Works
Important results have been achieved on the bandjir-freedom of regions in Atjèh, especially in the area of the Peusangen and Arakoendo rivers, where works for that purpose have been spent to a total of more than half a million guilders, and where the favourable consequence is that some tens of thousands of hectares of sawah-land have been freed from the almost annual excess of flooding, whereby importantly greater harvest-certainty has been obtained. The bandjir-freedom works on the Peusangen and Arakoendo rivers were the necessary precondition of the irrigation works that would bring the irrigation water to the rice fields.
Significance
The Arakoendo-rivier is one of the principal rivers of the Noordkust of Atjèh, and the site of one of the principal Dutch flood-control works in Atjèh. The more than half a million guilders spent on the bandjir-freedom works on the Peusangen and Arakoendo rivers, and the tens of thousands of hectares of sawah-land thereby freed from the almost annual excess of flooding, together constitute one of the principal Dutch investments in the post-war economic development of the Noordkust of Atjèh.
