Veenhuizen family, father with three sons, settled a couple years before 1923 near kilometre 98 on Gajo-weg at Takengon in simple bamboo houses to seek existence with horticulture.
Enterprise Paja Toempi
Spot where they opened enterprise Paja Toempi on 25 baoe ground has good and less good characteristics. Paja lies at foot mountain slope along which washed soil comes as welcome gain over garden. But water fairly lacking, unfavorable for horticulture.
In 1921 began cultivating potatoes beside various vegetables. Disease appeared in potatoes, but Dutch seed potatoes imported with difficulty kept well.
Sales sought in Atjeh itself, bringing fruits with trucks to Bireuen to transfer into Atjeh-tram. Transport truck 5-6 hours, tram ride usually one more day, so deliveries cannot consist of leaf vegetables quickly wilting, but beets, turnips, cabbage, peas, carrots, terongs. Therefore limited market, fairly far removed. Potato cultivation could find wider market but small enterprise not able large deliveries.
Entrepreneurs would soon get 300 baoe forest ground at KM 95 and 96 thinking to plant coffee there.
