Van den Blijck was an Eerste-Luitenant der Infanterie of the Nederlandsch-Indisch Leger who, in November 1874, commanded the Compagnie Mineurs en Sappeurs at Kota Radja during the middle phase of the Atjeh-oorlog. He was an infantry officer temporarily detached to the engineers for want of trained engineer officers, and was the immediate commander of Tweede-Luitenant C. J. Snijders in the first weeks after the latter’s arrival in Atjeh on 8 November 8 November 1874.
Command of the Mineurs Compagnie at Kota Radja
The Compagnie Mineurs en Sappeurs stationed at Kota Radja in late 1874 was, like most of the engineer establishment in Atjeh, commanded by infantry officers on temporary detachment, the Korps Ingenieurs, Mineurs en Sappeurs not having enough trained officers to spare. Van den Blijck commanded the company; his second-in-command was the Eerste-Luitenant der Infanterie Bartelds. When Snijders arrived at Kota Radja from Olehleh on 8 November 8 November 1874 and reported to Majoor der Genie W. J. C. Leers, Leers assigned him to the company, where Van den Blijck and Bartelds “ontvingen hun nieuwen collega hartelijk en bleken ook in den vervolge uitstekende kameraden.” The two infantry officers formed a lasting rapport with Snijders, who would otherwise have served his first months in Atjeh without senior mentorship from his own arm.
