Toengkoe Sjech Marabahan was a very aged Atjehsche oelama (scholar of the scriptures) who stood in special esteem with the Atjehnese. His accession was one of the most important tokens of the pacification achieved under generaal K. van der Heyden: on 7 March 1881 — four days before the cabinet letter of 11 March 1881 that replaced the general by a civil governor — he was received by Van der Heyden in the presence of a large number of chiefs and religious teachers at Kota Radja. In Verstege’s review of the period (after Kielstra) his reception closed the series: the swearing of Toekoe Nja Abbas Setia Oelama (24 January 1880), the coming over of Potjoet Abbas (July 1880), and the homage paid to the general by many heads on 4 October 1880 after the close of the fast.
