Toeankoe Radja Keumala (real name Moesa) was the son of Toeankoe Asém (Pangéran Asem), the fiercest opponent in the Atjèh-oorlog. He lived at Keudah near Koeta Radja on ƒ50 monthly onderstand (support pension), having submitted to Koeta Radja in 1903. He served as geestelijk adviseur (spiritual adviser) to the governor and was a member of the Raad agama.
Scholarly profile
Toeankoe Radja Keumala was scholarly in Arabic and mystic studies, and had made the hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca) twice. His scholarly credentials made him a valued geestelijk adviseur to the governor, and he was appointed to the Raad agama established by Stbl. 1920 N°. 398.
Family connections
Toeankoe Radja Keumala was connected to some of the most prominent Atjèhnese families:
- His father was Toeankoe Asém (Pangéran Asem), “the fiercest opponent in the Atjèh-oorlog”
- His sister was Teungkoe Ratna, wife of Panglima Pölém (sagi-head of the XXII Moekim’s)
- His aunt was Pö Tjoet Meurah (Tjout Nja’ Meurah), a prominent woman raised at the kraton court
- His niece Teungkoe Djam (daughter of Pö Tjoet Meurah) married the pretender Sultan Moehamat Dawöt
The Raad agama
As a member of the Raad agama, Toeankoe Radja Keumala served alongside Teungkoe Tjhèh Ibrahim (hatib of the great mosque at Koeta Radja). The Raad agama was not a priesterraad with judicial authority (as on Java) but merely a college of advies (advisory body) to the governor.
