Schiff was the Dutch resident designated as one of the two original gouvernements-commissaris to be dispatched to Atjeh in 1873, together with Van de Wall. When Van de Wall fell mortally ill, the Minister expressed doubts about whether Schiff alone was sufficient for such a weighty mission. Schiff’s missive confirmed that the purchase of a ship by the Atjehsche envoys at Singapore was genuine, contradicting Read’s belief that it was merely a fabrication, and identifying the broker Angelbeek and even naming the purchase price.
