Van de Wall was the Dutch colonial official designated as one of the two original gouvernements-commissaris to be dispatched to Atjeh in 1873, together with Schiff. When the telegram of 16 February 1873 arrived informing the Hague of the impending mission, Van de Wall was already on his deathbed. His illness necessitated the substitution of vice-president Nieuwenhuyzen as sole commissioner, a change that the Minister used to point to Nieuwenhuyzen as the most suitable replacement.
