Greve was a Kapitein-Luitenant (captain-lieutenant) of the Royal Netherlands Navy, commander of the warship Merapi, and the senior naval officer present on the roadstead of Lampanas with whom the commander of the Lamtoba column, Luitenant-Kolonel Gerlach, arranged the repatriation of the troops in September 1879, as recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889). He is to be distinguished from the mining engineer De Greve of the central-Sumatran coal discoveries.
The embarkation arrangement of September 1879
The Militaire Bevelhebber had determined that the return of the troops from the Lampanas quarantine should be effected exclusively by the transport Graaf van Bijland, and that the column-commandant should arrange the particulars with the senior naval officer on the roadstead of Lampanas. “In overleg dus met den Kapitein-Luitenant Greve, commandant van het oorlogschip de Merapi,” it was settled that the embarkation should take place in three parts, beginning at six o’clock in the morning of 2 September 1879: the transport should land the troops at Oleh-leh in the afternoon, and immediately set course again for Lampanas, so that the embarkation might be continued undisturbed at the same hour on the two following days. On 4 September, in accordance with the stipulation of the commander of the Marine, everything was finished by ten o’clock, and Greve’s Merapi — which with the Amboina had kept the station at Lampanas during the troops’ stay — steamed back to her station before Pedir.
