Dr. Julius Jacobs was author of Het familie- en kampongleven op Groot-Atjeh (1894), cited by Dr. R. Broersma for social history of Groot-Atjeh and for leprosy customs.
On leprosy in Aceh
Jacobs noted that sufferers in Groot-Atjeh were inexorably expelled and could go to a specific kampong with sulfur hot springs. Real estate of leprosy sufferer passed to family and spouse considered legally divorced. The lepers’ kampong formed small society of unfortunates, maintaining fields, crafts, fisheries as far as able. Disease occurred less frequent in Groot-Atjeh than eastern coast where Pidie and Pasei region were worse visited.
He also reported that in 1893 no pepper of significance was harvested, illustrating volatility of pepper culture.
