Frederik Nieuwenhuijzen was Vice-President of the Council of the Indies who served as the Dutch Government Commissioner for Political Affairs during the First Aceh Expedition in 1873.
Political Mission to Aceh
In March 1873, Governor-General James Loudon appointed Nieuwenhuijzen to lead political negotiations with Sultan Alauddin Mahmud Syah IX. Tasked with compelling Aceh to recognize Dutch sovereignty and eliminate foreign diplomatic overtures, Nieuwenhuijzen arrived off the Aceh roadstead aboard a warship on 22 March 1873.
After receiving evasive replies to his formal notes from the Acehnese court, Nieuwenhuijzen issued an official Declaration of War on 26 March 1873. He accompanied Supreme Commander Johan Harmen Rudolf Köhler during the landing at Pante Cermin on 8 April 1873. Following Köhler’s death and the failed attack on the Kraton of Aceh, Nieuwenhuijzen recommended the total withdrawal of the expeditionary force to Batavia in April 1873.
