Enoch was a Menadonese Marechaussee of the Korps Marechaussee van Atjeh en Onderhorigen who served in the colonne Schmidt of 1910-1911 as the klewang man — the soldier whose role, after the korporaal Nussy had shot, was to “werken af met de klewang” — to finish off with the klewang. Enoch’s pairing with Nussy — the shot and the blade — is the book’s small symbolic register of the colonne method’s two-man dardanel system.
The killing of Peutoeha Gam Masén (May 1911)
When Peutoeha Gam Masén was omsingeld near the Kroeëng Seukoeleh in May 1911 and summoned to surrender, “hij trok zijn reuntjong, de Atjehse kris” and threw himself on the two voorste Marechaussees — the dardanellen of the luitenant. “Nussy schoot en Enoch werkte af met de klewang.” The pairing — Nussy’s shot and Enoch’s blade — is the book’s set-piece of the two-man dardanel system: the dardanel who shot first and the dardanel who finished with the klewang.
The schuilplaats assault (May 1911)
In the overval on the schuilplaats of the Tiriō bende later in May, Enoch was one of the seven who climbed the steile waterral under fire: “Nussy, Gomies, Liklikwatil, Enoch, Kamagi, Paliaman en Oesoel klommen er tegenop.” The seven who climbed the waterral were the colonne’s beste mensen — its best men — and Enoch was one of them.
The killing of Tgk. Tjhi Majét (May 1911)
In the chase of the four vluchtelingen after the schuilplaats assault, Enoch shot two of them, including Tgk. Tjhi Majét. “Nog twee ervan door Enoch, waaronder ook Tgk. Tjhi Majét di Tiri.” The corpse was carried to Tangsé and the bandages torn into hundreds of pieces as holy relics.
