Van Drongelen was an Ambonese sergeant 2e klasse of the Korps Marechaussee van Atjeh en Onderhorigen who served in the colonne Schmidt of 1910-1911 — the sergeant 2e kl. (the pang in the brigade hierarchy on Aceh) who made the omtrekking with six men that omsingelde the ladang of Peutoeha Gam Masén near the Kroeëng Seukoeleh, and who was one of the five (with Nussy, Gomies, Enoch and Kamagi) who made the levensgevaarlijke afdaling along the steile wand that gained the M. 95 and the small boy — the son of Tgk. Tjhi Majét.
The omsingeling of the ladang
“De Amb. sergeant 2e kl. Van Drongelen maakte met zes man een omtrekking en zette de rand af” — the Ambonese sergeant 2e kl. Van Drongelen made a flanking movement with six men and set the edge off. The ladang was omsingeld within half an hour. The omsingeling was the colonne method’s tactical payoff: the bekas read, the ladang surrounded, the bende engaged.
The levensgevaarlijke afdaling
“De Amb. sergeant 2e kl. van Drongelen, Nussy, Gomies, Enoch en Kamagi deden een levensgevaarlijke afdaling langs een steile wand.” The five — Van Drongelen, Nussy, Gomies, Enoch and Kamagi — made a life-threatening descent along a steep wall. The descent gained the M. 95 (a *karabijn) and the small boy — the son of Tgk. Tjhi Majét — who “vertelde in zijn onschuld van alles aan de luitenant” (told the luitenant, in his innocence, all sorts of things).
