C. A. Bannink was a Dutch military writer whose series Grepen uit den Atjeh-oorlog (“Episodes from the Aceh War”), printed in the Orgaan der Officiersvereeniging in 1936, is a frequently cited secondary source for the middle phase of the Atjeh-oorlog. Bannink drew on the eyewitness accounts of surviving officers, including the lecture of Eerste-Luitenant T. W. G. Merz of October 1935, and his work was in turn used by D. van den Berg in the 1944 biography of Generaal Snijders.

The Series Grepen uit den Atjeh-oorlog

The series Grepen uit den Atjeh-oorlog appeared in the Orgaan der Officiersvereeniging in 1936. It is an episodic treatment, drawing on oral recollection and surviving documents, of operations of the Atjeh-oorlog from the Eerste Atjeh-expeditie of April 1873 onward. The episode devoted to the Missigit Longbatta operation of 31 December 31 December 1874–January 1875 cites at length the 1935 lecture of T. W. G. Merz on the construction of the redoubt by Tweede-Luitenant C. J. Snijders.

Use by Later Writers

The biographer D. van den Berg refers readers to Bannink’s series as a principal source for the participation of Snijders in the war: “Voor de deelneming van den Luitenant SNIJDERS aan krijgsbedrijven zie men o.m. Grepen uit den Atjeh-oorlog door C. A. BANNINK in het Orgaan der Officiersvereeniging van 1936.” Van den Berg’s quotation of the Merz lecture on the Missigit Longbatta work is taken via Bannink.
