Indië Weerbaar (“Defensible Indies”) was the movement for the military self-defence of the Netherlands Indies for which the former Maréchaussée officer W. V. Rhemrev acted as organiser, travelling to the Netherlands with a deputation in 1917.
Rhemrev’s part
The 1930 jubilee number of Het Nieuws van den Dag voor Nederlandsch-Indië records in its portrait notice of Rhemrev that “in 1917 ging de heer Rhemrev als organisator van de beweging Indië Weerbaar met een deputatie naar Holland” — in 1917 Mr. Rhemrev went to Holland with a deputation as organiser of the Indië Weerbaar movement.
The notice supplies no further particulars of the movement’s programme, but places the episode in Rhemrev’s career between his service with the Korps Maréchaussée in Atjeh and the Gajo and Alas lands and his later civil activity as co-founder of the Vereeniging Nederlandsch-Indische Jaarbeurs and promoter of the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng.
