Barisans were indigenous auxiliary troops recruited from the island of Madoera (Madura) who served alongside Dutch forces in Aceh. They provided valuable services during several expeditions, including the 1875–1876 campaign, assisting in the construction of fortifications such as the benteng at Bockit Daroe.
Role in the Aceh Campaign
Barisan units were employed in the marshy sawahs, helping to carry artillery pieces and build bridges, and they participated in the assault on the kampong of Daroe.
