Raden Ario Setjo Negoro was a Madurese second lieutenant of the barisan — the auxiliary native troops of the Netherlands Indies Army — of Bangkallang (Bangkalan, Madura), serving in Atjeh in 1876. He commanded the 31-man escort of the medical officer Dr. Döring in the ambush of 28 July 1876 between Kota Alam and Oleh Karang.

When red-clad Atjehers fired on the escort at the channel bridge from Tjapoetoe and charged with klewang and lance, the detachment fell back in confusion. Setjo Negoro, with seven Madurese soldiers, joined the medical officer’s rallying group at its second covered position and went beside him in the final charge that drove the enemy from the field. H. F. Meijer, in Atjeh van 26 December 1875 tot 4 September 1876 (1883), nevertheless recorded a critical footnote: when Döring called on the soldiers to follow him to the aid of two fallen comrades, none of the Madurese — wherewith the lieutenant Raden Ario Setjo Negoro stood — obeyed; only two European fusiliers went with the doctor.
His name is preserved verbatim in the official report reproduced in the book, in which the detachment is described as composed of Madurese of the barisan and men of an infantry corps, “onder het commando van den 2en Luitenant der barisan Raden Ario Setjo Negoro van Bangkallang.”
