The Siege of Grave (1674) was a concurrent operation to the Siege of Naarden (1674), in which Prince of Orange (William III)’s forces attempted to dislodge French and Spanish troops from the town of Grave. The source notes that on 9 September 1674 the Dutch opened artillery fire on the town’s walls, and that the Waterlandsche poort was heavily damaged (see 276).
Relevance to Aceh
The successful relief of Grave and Naarden helped secure the Dutch heartland, allowing the Dutch Navy to continue its patrols of the North Sea and protect the Indische retourvloot. The safety of this fleet was essential for maintaining the Dutch East India Company’s trade with Aceh, which relied on uninterrupted sea lanes.
