1674 was a pivotal year in the Dutch Republic’s military history, marked by the Siege of Naarden (1674) and the Siege of Grave (1674) against French and Spanish forces (see 276‑277). The successful Dutch operations secured the home front, allowing the Dutch Navy to continue protecting the Indische retourvloot, which carried spices from Aceh and other East Indies ports to Europe.
Broader Aceh context
During this year the Dutch East India Company continued its profitable trade with Aceh, sending regular shipments of pepper that fed the European market. The stability achieved by the Dutch victories at home indirectly supported the VOC’s overseas activities in Aceh.
