The Battle of Schooneveld was a naval engagement fought on 27 August 1666 between the Dutch Navy, commanded by Michiel de Ruyter, and a combined French fleet and English fleet. The source records that the Dutch fleet, despite being outnumbered, inflicted heavy casualties on the enemy while sustaining relatively few losses (see 275). The battle was part of the Franco‑Dutch War (1672–1678).
Impact on Aceh‑related trade
The Dutch victory secured the North Sea and English Channel, allowing the Indische retourvloot to continue its voyages to the East Indies, including the port of Aceh, without disruption by French privateers. The protection of this trade was vital for the Dutch East India Company’s spice monopoly.
