Isaac Sweers was a Dutch vice‑admiral who fought alongside Michiel de Ruyter and Jan de Liefde in the Battle of Schooneveld (1666). The source records that he perished on the Dutch flag‑ship Olyphant during the engagement (see 275). His death was part of the heavy Dutch casualties that nevertheless preserved the Indische retourvloot, a lifeline for the Dutch East India Company’s trade with Aceh.
Service and Aceh‑related significance
Sweers’ career was largely defined by his participation in fleet actions that protected the sea lanes to the East Indies. By ensuring the safety of the return convoy, he indirectly contributed to the continuity of Dutch‑Aceh commercial relations throughout the seventeenth century.
